With savings in the pocket from house painting in Nantucket, Doug and Susan set out to travel “From London to Nairobi” together, meeting up with their close friend, Richard Barnhardt who was living in Togo during a stint in the Peace Corps. After traveling through Italy and France, the crew purchased a Land Rover for $500 in cash and made their way south through Spain and over to North Africa. After the Land Rover died in the Atlas
Mountains, hitch-hiking became the primary mode of transportation. If the duo couldn’t grab a ride or sleep under a roof, it would be sleeping under the stars or in a tent. While on the way to the Sahara, they learned that Doug’s father passed away back home, so they packed up and made the trek to the states. Though the trip was cut short, the photos, memories, and stories have lasted a lifetime.

Morocco

As Doug and Susan made their way into North Africa, Morocco had a particularly alluring pull. They slept on the beaches of the Atlantic, stayed with local families in the the rugged Atlas Mountains, and feel entirely in love with the people and the land.

As they made their way east into Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, the terrain and the cities of Morocco felt like a world away. At this point, the Land Rover had died and the parts were sold to locals, leaving Doug and Susan to cover ground by hitchhiking.
